In very un-USGA fashion the tournament committee has decided to leave the 18th, home hole at Torrey Pines as a par 5, 571 yards is what the hole palys as during the Buick and there is no word as to where the USGA will set up the tee other than to say the hole will remain a par 5. The question that remains is will the USGA play teh course as a par 71 or possibly even a 72. Holes 6, 13 or both are the most likely candidates to be converted and keep the tradition of par 70 US Open's alive.
Both candidates have formidable obstacles that make even par difficult as a par 5, but to think these might be the one or two holes that are converted will make both play rediculously tough. Especially 6, where players will be forced to hit a high cut over and around the trees to even think about getting home in two and then there is the 13th with a fortified green in front and that infamous "US Open" rough which is sure to swallow up anything long, left, or right. However the course ends up in the tournment committee's hands will be sure to provide the years toughest test and much 72nd hole drama, concluding play witha par 5.
