Boo Weekley successfully defended his title at the Verizon Heritage this past weekend, joining the exclusive company of Payne Stewart, Davis Love III and the only players to do so. Weekely, since him emergence on the national stage this time last year has made major headlines and has also proven he can compete and win on the toughest courses on tour. Thus far, on the season he has amassed one win, 4 top tens and in the 10-12 cuts he has made finished no worse than 30th. Boo ranks better than avg in all of the Key stats (pgatour.com), except putting and among the top ten in driving, winnings and FedEx Cup Points.
In the coming weeks, look for Weekley to be a contender at Wachovia and
the Players, another Dye track, where driving accuracy and pinpoint
precision into guarded greens are both musts to be around and in
contention come Sunday. He finished outside of 40th last year in each event, but is playing more consistent coming in and finding himself on more leaderboards week in/week out.
On Sunday at Hilton Head, Weekley accomplished another milestone in winning for the first time on tour after holding the 54 hole overnight lead. He came out and got to work early, birdieing 2 and 5 although bogeys at the 3rd and 8th put him at E at the turn. His back nine was more of the same 3 birdies, 3 bogeys and a 71 E, final round that was still enough win by 3 shots over Aaron Baddeley and Anthony Kim.
