General Review
Pros: -great design
-mental challenge
-GPS
-course staff
-food
-greens were rolling very true with perfect speed, fast but forgiving

Cons: -price
-location
Avalon Lakes is not far from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh, however a good hour drive from each, located just outside of youngstown, OH on the OH/PA border
-frequent spike marks, near and around the hole (2 ft. and in). granted it was late in teh day and on that particular day teh course had hosted a club tournament for its members.

Overall Thoughts: my day playing Avalon Lakes was one of the most enjoyable rounds in recent memory. As with any Dye course, you have to be in the right place all the time to score. One thing Avalon Lakes surely got right was the use of accurate GPS, without that technology the course would have been a nightmare and certainly not fun as Dye design's generally contain hidden "treasures" or hazards, OB, and other features blind to the plyer from the tee or even the fairway as you approach a green. The GPS prevented all of that and from me hitting driver when i shouldnt have. In addition when you pulled off the correct shot and cleared the sunken bunkers 235 off the tee but didnt roll to the bunkers 290 thrugh the fairway a sense of accomplishment was felt that helped to build momentum as you were rewarded for not only managing your game but knowing where NOT to be. As mentioned above the club staff was amazing, catering to your every need. the grounds crew KNOW what they are doing and have the course in immaculate shape where all bunkers/greens play similarly from one to teh next and the fairways offer perfect lies for distance/spin control from any pposition. the rough was penal but not to the point of hindering advancement, just placing the ball close to the hole. I highly reccomend this course to any player looking for a challenge and playing one of the premier designs in America. Avalon lakes is that faclity and if youre in the area, do check it out.

General Review
Pros: -Wonderfully complex and beautiful layout
-Course was in amazing shape
-GPS is a savior from the Pete Dye design, with numerous blind tee shots and/or hidden hazards
-Staff is top notch. They treat everyone like a member.

Cons: -The location of the course is generally flat, which makes for a slightly less dramatic ambiance
-The cost is not cheap, yet feels worth every penny

Overall Thoughts: This course was an absolute joy to play. Being a Pete Dye design, you know that it's going to punish you for not being straight and conservative, so if you only like to "grip it and rip it", this might not be the course for you. For us, it was a constant mental as well as physical contest, but thanks to the GPS pointing out the potential pitfalls of the course we managed to navigate the course without feeling too cheated by Dye.

The course is absolutely beautiful and the grounds staff keeps it in flawless shape. The Bentgrass fairways were well groomed and the greens roll as true as you can find in a public course.

I can't recommend this course enough. If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking it out.
