Woods Captures Triple Double in Akron PDF Print E-mail

As tour players continued tuning up or screwing up their swings and games to ready themselves for the PGA, Tiger Woods snowmanned the field as the only player under par for the week at -8.  Tiger's Sunday 65 was the low round for day and tied Zach Johnson's Friday 65 for the low round of the week. This victory at the WGC Bridgestone marks his sixth win at Firestone and moreover 14th WCG Victory. Since Tiger's emergence onto the world stage there have been 25 WGC events as it stands to date Woods: 14, World: 11.

This past week also marks the first time in a long while where Woods teed it up competively the week before a Major.  Some say winning the week before a Major never bodes well I argue last week in particular is a good tune up for the PGA twofold.

1)  Following a lackluster ball striking and shot making performance in the Open this win at the WCG Bridgestone lets him, as if he didnt know, but also lets the rest of the field (world) know whatever was not working across the pond is now and any chink in the armor has been reinforced as he beat Sabbitini by 9 on Sunday.

2)  The setup at Firestone could not be a more perfect test to prepare for the tree-lined, slick-greened, narrowed-fairway course at Southern Hills.  Both courses, old Style American Golf where shot shaping and trajectory are key.  Tiger showed this past week that his putter, iron play and even driver (aside from the long and trecherous 18th hole in which he played +2 for the four days), are in synch.  A statistical look inside his performance reveals that Tiger was in the top 20 in driving accuracy (for '07 thru last week he is 169th on tour).  He lead the week in Greens in Regulation (GIR), pars and driving distance and another top ten T6 for birdies with 14.  The most telling stats are his GIR and pars as the setup closely resembled Major Championship golf, par is a very good score and next week that will ring true, as well.

The Grueling Homestretch
This week in Tulsa, the air will be thick, the humidity will be off the charts, the winds will be up and most likely the scores.  The winner might be under par as history as Southern Hills shows (-1, -8, -11), but if Firestone is any indicator only one of the worlds top 50 was able to best par.  On Sunday there may be some red, other than whatever shirt Nike has picked out for Woods, however, it will be sure to be amongst a sea of black numbers and the eventual winner may be +3, +4, +5 come Sunday afternoon.
